Exploring options to rent storage? Here’s what you should know
Computers need space to store your data and to perform various tasks. The work you have done on your laptop or desktop is stored on a hard drive or USB (Universal Serial Bus) drive. Then there are the heavy files — feature films and documentaries for instance or PPT presentations and official videos. What do we do about them? Blu-ray disc stores several hours of high-definition videos which one can get by taking storage on rent from any rental firm.
All applications, files, and operating systems are stored in a computer’s hard drive and USB drives. ‘Memory’ is where short-term data is located. Storage translates to an operating system in which all files are stored for the long term. The speed with which your system boots up, loads, and accesses data depends on how much storage your computer has.
Computers in the earlier days had minimum storage, requiring a large number of floppy disks to back up data. Before that, there was magnetic storage in tapes with head magnetizing material for reading and writing processes. Hard disk drives (HDDs) with magnetized materials on glass or aluminum disks came later.
Things to consider while taking storage on rent
Internally-mounted hard drives can hold massive amounts — at least a terabyte (TB) — of information. 1 TB of storage equals 1,000 GB of data but it comes in a compact unit that’s lightweight and easy to carry.
Secondary storage options for computers include HDDs, solid-state storage, optical storage and tape, external hard disk drive, solid-state drives (SSDs) that use flash-based memory and store data in flash memory chips.
Those wanting to ‘rent’ storage should remember that secondary storage can be removable, internal, or external.
A USB flash drive includes flash memory with an integrated USB interface. USB, a common interface, helps in communication between devices such as digital cameras, external hard drives, keyboards, mice, scanners, and printers. It has a host controller such as a personal computer or smartphone. A USB flash drive can be rewritten and is removable, rewritable, and much smaller than an optical disc. It can store a large amount of data.
The tech world has also graduated to storage devices such as SAN (Storage Area Network), NAS (Network Attached Storage), and DAS (Direct Attached Storage). Most individuals and organizations will find it simpler to rent out storage because it’s cheaper than a direct purchase.
Costs of SAN and other storage rentals can start from Rs 15,000 onwards, depending on your requirements.
To take storage on rent, a hard disk of maybe 500 GB will cost around Rs 400 a month. One TB storage space can be rented for around Rs 1,500 or more. The cost of a hard disk of 500 GB is around Rs 5,000.
